What is Assent-Based Therapy?

Assent-based ABA goes beyond traditional approaches by actively honoring each child's preferences, boundaries, and voice throughout the therapeutic process.

We believe that meaningful progress happens when children feel safe, respected, and genuinely heard — not just compliant. This philosophy guides every session at Summit ABA.

Child-Led Goals Therapy targets are selected with input from the child, ensuring meaningful and motivating outcomes.
Ongoing Consent We continuously check in with clients, adjusting activities when discomfort or refusal is expressed.
Dignity First Every technique used is evaluated for its impact on the child's wellbeing and self-determination.
Naturalistic Learning Skills are built in real-life contexts that are meaningful to the child — not just clinical tasks.

About Summit ABA

Meet the team behind compassionate, evidence-based care in the NC Triad.

Nick Heath, BCBA — Founder of Summit ABA Therapy

Nick Heath

Founder & Board Certified Behavior Analyst

Nick Heath is the founder and lead clinician of Summit ABA Therapy, a private practice dedicated to delivering high-quality, compassionate Applied Behavior Analysis services to children and families across the NC Triad.

With a deep commitment to ethical, assent-based practice, Nick believes that every child deserves to be treated with dignity and respect — and that the most meaningful therapeutic progress happens when children feel safe, heard, and genuinely engaged in the process.

Summit ABA was founded on the principle that ABA therapy should be something children want to participate in, not something done to them. Nick brings this philosophy to every assessment, session, and caregiver training he conducts.

What Guides Us

Dignity & Respect

Every child is treated as a whole person with preferences, feelings, and the right to express them.

Evidence-Based

All interventions are grounded in the science of behavior analysis and current best-practice research.

Family Partnership

Parents and caregivers are integral members of the treatment team — always informed, always involved.

Individualized Care

No two children are the same. Every treatment plan is tailored specifically to the child's unique needs and goals.

Our Services

Comprehensive ABA services tailored to each child's unique needs and goals.

Comprehensive Assessments

We begin with a thorough evaluation to understand your child's strengths, needs, and learning style. Assessments inform individualized treatment planning and establish meaningful baseline measures.

In-Home ABA Therapy

Services delivered in the home allow skills to be practiced in the most natural environment. This approach supports generalization and makes it easier for families to participate in the therapeutic process.

Caregiver Training & Support

Empowering families is central to our mission. We provide hands-on coaching and guidance so caregivers can confidently support their child's growth between sessions and beyond discharge.

Skill-Building Programs

Targeting communication, social skills, self-care, daily living, and adaptive behaviors — individualized to what matters most to your child and family, with goals built collaboratively.

Behavior Support Plans

For children experiencing challenging behaviors, we develop individualized plans rooted in functional assessment — focusing on teaching replacement skills rather than simply reducing behavior.

Progress Monitoring & Reporting

Data is collected at every session and reviewed regularly. Families receive transparent progress updates and treatment plans are adjusted based on what the data — and the child — tells us.

Assent-Based ABA: What It Means & Why It Matters

Traditional ABA has evolved significantly. At Summit ABA, we practice a modern, ethical approach that centers the child's participation — not just their compliance.

Assent means more than just agreement — it's an ongoing process of honoring a child's willingness to participate, respecting when they say "no," and building therapy around what genuinely matters to them and their family.

  • Children have the right to refuse or modify activities they find distressing
  • Goals are selected collaboratively with the child and family in mind
  • Therapy is designed to be something children want to engage in
  • Clinicians respond to subtle signs of discomfort, not just overt refusal
  • Preferred activities and natural reinforcers are prioritized
  • Progress is meaningful to the child's actual life — not just test scores

We believe children who feel respected and safe in therapy make greater, more lasting progress. Assent-based care isn't just the ethical choice — it's the effective one.

Frequently Asked Questions

Have questions about ABA therapy or how to get started? We've got answers.

What is ABA therapy?
Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) is an evidence-based therapy most commonly used with individuals diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder. It focuses on understanding how behavior works and using that understanding to teach meaningful skills and reduce barriers to learning, communication, and independence.
How do I know if my child qualifies for ABA services?
ABA is typically recommended for children with an Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) diagnosis. Most insurance plans require a formal ASD diagnosis from a licensed psychologist or physician to authorize services. Contact us and we'll help you understand your options and navigate the authorization process.
What does the intake process look like?
The process typically starts with an initial inquiry call, followed by insurance verification. Once coverage is confirmed, we schedule a comprehensive intake assessment where we get to know your child and family. From there, we develop an individualized treatment plan and begin services.
Where do services take place?
Summit ABA currently provides in-home services throughout the Triad area, including Winston-Salem, Greensboro, High Point, and surrounding communities. In-home therapy allows skills to be learned and practiced in the environment where they matter most.
How many hours of therapy will my child receive?
Hours are individualized based on your child's assessment results, goals, and insurance authorization. We work with families to find a schedule that is both clinically appropriate and sustainable for your household.
What does "assent-based" therapy mean?
Assent-based therapy means we actively honor your child's participation and preferences throughout treatment. If a child expresses discomfort or reluctance — through words, behavior, or body language — we take that seriously and adjust accordingly. The goal is for therapy to be something your child is genuinely willing to engage in, not something done to them.
How are caregivers involved in treatment?
Caregiver involvement is a cornerstone of what we do. You'll receive regular updates, training on how to support your child's goals at home, and opportunities to be present during sessions. You are always part of the team.
